Rare Child (Adrenaline): B+
Comparisons may be odious, but Cotton gives you little choice about referencing The Black Crowes and their mix of Southern rock, Southern soul and ’70s Brit-rock revivalism in describing her third album. But what Cotton has that Chris Robinson lacks is an honest-to-God voice with real power, conviction, emotion and soul. It doesn’t quite make up for the dud songs, but when the singing and songwriting are in alignment, as on “Testify,” wow. just stand back. Download: “Bang My Drum.”
